White Wolf rediscovery trio, Volume 1
Three science fiction novels with time travel as the theme are included in the Rediscovery Trio: The Winds of Time, The Year of the Quiet Sun, and There Will Be Time.
The Winds of Time by Chad Oliver just barely qualifies as a time travel story, but it's more of a thoughtful version of an old-fashioned Golden Age space-opera. It has a dark subtext (all of these stories do), but with good well-rounded characters (Earthly and not).
The Year of the Quiet Sun by WIlson Tucker is easily the darkest and most depressing. And the most political. It does a few clever things with time travel, but the future looks awful. Thankfully, the future from 1970 wasn't quite that hellish.
There Will Be Time by Poul Anderson is the best of the lot, and ends with optimism, without shrinking from future horror. It's really about the time travelers as well as the shape of things to come, about how one might use time travel, and build community. It also showcases some very broad, moderate political thinking. |
